How to use AnotPad

This guide shows, step by step, everything AnotPad does and how to get the most out of each feature.

1. Create a note

On the home page, type a name and click "Create or open". The name becomes the address of the note (https://anotpad.com/note-name). If a note with that name already exists, it opens; if not, a new blank note starts. Write freely: the text saves itself, and the bottom bar shows "Saved" with the time.

2. Continue on another device

Open the same address on your phone, your computer or another tab. Changes show up in real time. If someone changes the note while you are typing, the app warns you and lets you choose between loading the new version or keeping your text.

3. Organize in folders

Use slashes in the name to create folders: work/meetings/october creates the note "october" inside "meetings", which is inside "work". The panel on the left shows the parent folder, the subfolders and the notes next to each other. With the new subfolder button at the top you create a subfolder without typing the address. In the ⋮ menu you can rename a subfolder (the notes inside it go along) or delete a note.

4. Attach files

On the Files tab, click "Attach file", drag a file onto the screen or paste an image with Ctrl+V. Each file can be up to 2 MB. Images are automatically reduced and converted to save space. If you delete a file by accident, the "Undo" button restores it.

5. Go back to an earlier version

The clock icon in the bottom bar shows the last 2 saved versions of the text. When you restore one, the current text also goes to the history, so you can go back.

6. Search

Press Ctrl+K (or click the magnifier) to search the name and text of the notes in the main folder and everything inside it. The search ignores accents and capitalization.

7. Protect and share

The "Lock" button protects the note with an email and a password. After you unlock it, you do not need to type the password again while you browse, and the "Log out" button locks the note again. To share without allowing editing through the app, use "Copy read-only link" in the ⋮ menu.

Locking is a simple barrier and the read-only link is just a view. Do not store sensitive information in AnotPad.

8. Create a reminder

In the ⋮ menu, choose "Create reminder". Enter the title, date, time and how long before you want to be notified. Then click "Add to Google Calendar", which opens your calendar already filled in, or "Download .ics file", which opens in Outlook, Apple Calendar and other apps. The event carries the link to the note, so tapping it takes you back to the text.

The alert comes from your calendar app. AnotPad does not store the reminder or ask for your email.

9. Checklists

In the formatting bar, the "Checklist" button turns the line into an item with a checkbox. Enter creates the next item, clicking (or tapping) the box ticks it, and Ctrl+Enter ticks the item where the cursor is. When the list has two or more items, a counter shows progress. You can also type "[] " at the start of a line. The ready-made templates, on the Templates page, already come with checklists.

10. Open on your phone and install the app

In the ⋮ menu, "Open on phone (QR code)" shows a code that leads to the note’s address: point your phone’s camera and it opens right away. By default the code leads to the read-only link. In browsers that allow it, the "Install app" button (on the home page and in the ⋮ menu) installs AnotPad as an app; on iPhone and iPad, use Share › Add to Home Screen.
