Debt payoff plan template
Updated on October 28, 2026
Scattered debts feel bigger than they are, and it is hard to know where to start. Putting them all on one list, with balance, interest and payment, already brings relief. Then you only need to choose a payoff order and track it month by month until the last one is gone.
Debt payoff plan
Debts (in payoff order)
- 1st · Credit card · balance $2,400 · high interest · minimum $70
- 2nd · Overdraft · balance $500 · high interest · no fixed payment
- 3rd · Personal loan · balance $5,000 · medium interest · payment $180
- 4th · Store installment plan · balance $600 · no interest · payment $50
Month by month
- November: paid minimums + $200 on the credit card
- December:
Paid off
So it does not happen again
- Credit card only for spending that fits this month’s budget
- Build an emergency fund after paying off
How to use it
- Create the note with "Use this template" and list every debt, leaving none out: balance, interest rate (or none) and minimum payment.
- Decide how much you can pay each month on top of the minimum payments. Even a small amount makes a difference.
- Choose the order: highest interest first (costs less overall) or smallest balance first (pays something off quickly and keeps you going).
- Every month, pay the minimums on all of them, put the extra on the first one on the list and log it under "Month by month". When one is paid off, tick it and roll its payment into the next.
Tips
- Never skip the minimum payment on any debt, even those at the end of the list: late payments bring fees and more interest.
- Overdrafts and revolving credit card balances usually have the highest interest. When in doubt, compare the total cost shown on the contract or statement.
- Before taking a new loan to pay off the old ones, check that its total cost is really lower.
- Celebrate every debt you pay off by moving it to "Paid off". It is a real milestone.
When to get help
If the minimum payments added together are already more than you can pay, the plan has to start with renegotiation. Many banks and stores offer settlement deals, and there are official programs and free nonprofit credit counseling services for people in debt. Bring this note to the conversation: with everything listed, it is easier to negotiate and compare offers. This template is a way to get organized, not personalized financial advice.
Do not write contract, card or account numbers, passwords or documents in the note. The names of the debts and the amounts are enough.
