List to comma-separated text (and back)

Updated on October 30, 2026

Paste a list with one item per line and turn it into comma-separated text, with quotes if needed: "apple, banana, orange" or 'apple', 'banana', 'orange'. It also works the other way, from comma-separated text to a list. Nothing leaves your browser.

Options

Items: 0

The text is processed in your browser and is not sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Under "What to do", choose the direction: from list to text, or from comma-separated text to list.
  2. Paste the content in the first box.
  3. Choose the separator (comma, semicolon, vertical bar, space or tab) and, if generating text, the quotes and the removal of repeated items.
  4. Copy the result, or save it to a note. The summary shows how many items were found.

Ways to use it

  • SQL queries: turn a column of codes into '101', '102', '103' to use inside an IN (...) clause. Choose the comma separator and single quotes.
  • Emails: join a list of addresses, one per line, into text separated by semicolons to paste into the recipients field.
  • Spreadsheets: copy a column and turn it into a single row, or the other way around, to paste somewhere else.
  • Tags and keywords: a list of tags in lines becomes "tag1, tag2, tag3" to paste into a website or program.
  • Parameters and lists in code: the same text with double quotes, ready to paste into an array or a configuration file.

Options for list → text

  • Separator: comma (with a space after), semicolon, vertical bar, space or tab. A tab pastes well into spreadsheets, which read it as columns.
  • Quotes around each item: none, double ("a") or single ('a'). Useful for code, SQL and CSV files.
  • Remove repeated items: keeps only the first occurrence of each item.
  • Spaces at the start and end of each item and blank lines are ignored.

Text → list

In the opposite direction, the text is cut at each separator and each piece becomes a line. Quotes around items are removed, and empty items (as in "a,,b") are discarded. If the items themselves contain commas, use another separator, such as a semicolon, so an item is not cut in the middle.

To split a text at other separators, pick it from the list. To remove just the line breaks, use the remove line breaks tool.

Frequently asked questions

How do I put quotes around each item?
In the "list to text" direction, choose "Single quotes" or "Double quotes" under "Quotes around each item".
What if an item has a comma inside?
When turning text into a list, a comma inside an item would split it in two. In that case, choose a semicolon or another separator that does not appear inside the items.
Can I use it with Excel data?
Yes. Copy the cells of a column, paste them here (each cell becomes a line) and convert to text. For the opposite, copy the list result and paste it into the spreadsheet.
Does my data leave the browser?
No. The conversion happens in your browser.
