Number lines and add text to the start and end
Updated on October 30, 2026
Number the lines of a list (1., 2., 3.…) and put the same text at the start or end of each line, such as "- [ ] " to make a checklist or ";" at the end of each command. Your text never leaves your browser.
The text is processed in your browser and is not sent anywhere.
How to use it
- Paste the list in the first box, one item per line.
- To number, leave "Number the lines" ticked and choose the format (1. text, 1) text, 1 - text…) and the starting number.
- To add text, fill in "Text at the start of each line" and/or "Text at the end of each line".
- Copy the result or save it to a note.
Practical examples
- Checklist in AnotPad: use "- [ ] " as the start text, without numbering. Paste the result into a note and each line becomes an item with a checkbox.
- Numbered list for an email or document: turn on numbering with the "1." or "1)" format.
- Bullets: "- " or "• " at the start of each line turns a list into bullet points.
- Quote: "> " at the start, for text that will be pasted into a program that uses Markdown.
- Code: "," or ";" at the end of each line, or quotes at the ends, to build lists and commands.
- HTML: "<li>" at the start and "</li>" at the end of each line, to build a list on a page.
Numbering options
- Start at: the first number. Handy to continue a list that already has items, such as starting at 11.
- Pad with zeros: 01, 02, ..., 10 instead of 1, 2, ..., 10. It keeps the numbers aligned and the alphabetical order right.
- Format: what comes after the number (period, parenthesis, hyphen, colon or just a space).
- Blank lines are not numbered and do not use up a number: they stay as they are.
Combining with other tools
To number a list in alphabetical order, sort the lines first (sort lines tool) and then number them. For a list without repeats, run remove duplicate lines first. When you need to take off a numbering that already exists, go the other way: copy the text without the numbers and add the numbering again here, in the format you want.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I turn a list into a checklist in AnotPad?

- Can I number by twos or in descending order?
- This tool numbers one by one, from the number you choose. For other sequences, edit the result.
- What happens to blank lines?
- They stay as they are: they get no number and none of the start or end text.
- Is the text sent to a server?
- No. Everything happens in your browser.
