How to use it

  1. Type the number in the box. Use a comma for thousands and a point for decimals (1,250.50), or digits only (1250.5). The "
    quot; sign is accepted.
  2. Choose how to write it: "Amount in dollars", which adds dollars and cents, or "Plain number", to write only the number.
  3. Copy the result, or save it to a note to keep the receipt text.

The rules the tool applies

  • Hyphens: numbers from 21 to 99 that are not multiples of ten take a hyphen: "twenty-one", "ninety-nine".
  • No "and" inside numbers: American style writes 1,234 as "one thousand two hundred thirty-four". The word "and" appears only between dollars and cents.
  • Scales: thousand, million, billion and trillion stay singular after the number ("two million", "three billion").
  • Dollars and cents: "one dollar", "two dollars", "one cent", "fifty cents".
  • Decimals in plain numbers: 3.14 is read "three point one four", digit by digit, the usual way in English.
  • Negative numbers start with "minus".

Why write the amount in words

On checks, receipts, promissory notes and contracts, the amount often shows up in numbers and in words. The reason is security: a number is easy to tamper with (a "1" becomes a "7", a zero is added at the end), while words are harder to alter without leaving traces. If the two forms disagree, many documents give priority to the amount written in words.

Always double-check the result before using it in a document with legal value. The tool follows the grammar rules, but each institution may have its own writing requirements. On a check, the cents are often written as a fraction ("and 50/100") instead; follow your bank’s convention.

Limits and rounding

The tool writes numbers up to 999 trillion. In amount mode, if you type more than two decimal places, the third one decides the rounding: 1.999 becomes "two dollars" and 1.994 becomes "one dollar and ninety-nine cents". The tool is built around American English; British English usually adds "and" after "hundred", as in "one hundred and twenty-three".

Frequently asked questions

How do I write $1,000,000.00 in words?
"One million dollars". For round amounts the tool writes the scale word and then "dollars".
Does it write dates, phone numbers or ID numbers?
No. The tool writes quantities and amounts. Dates, phone numbers and IDs have their own ways of being read.
What does the tool do with a number like 12,5?
In English mode a comma followed by three digits is read as a thousands separator (1,250 is one thousand two hundred fifty). Otherwise a comma is read as a decimal separator: "twelve point five".
Can I write amounts in euros or pounds?
Not at the moment: the amount mode writes dollars and cents. To get the number alone, use "Plain number" and add the currency name yourself.
