Options

Enter your grades to see the average. Leave the weight blank for weight 1.

How to use it

  1. Enter each grade on its own line. Use a point or a comma for decimals (7.5 or 7,5).
  2. If the exams have different weights, enter the weight next to each grade. If you leave it blank, the weight is 1 and the average is simple.
  3. Under "Passing average", enter the average your school or college requires. The default is 60 on a 0 to 100 scale; change it if your scale is different.
  4. To find out what you need on the next exam, enter its weight. The answer shows below the average.
  5. Use "Add grade" if you have more than four assessments.

Simple average and weighted average

The simple average adds the grades and divides by the number of exams: with 60, 80 and 70, the average is (60 + 80 + 70) ÷ 3 = 70. It works when all the assessments count the same.

In a weighted average, each grade is multiplied by its weight before adding, and the total is divided by the sum of the weights. For example, grades 60 (weight 1), 80 (weight 2) and 70 (weight 3): (60×1 + 80×2 + 70×3) ÷ (1 + 2 + 3) = 430 ÷ 6, which is 71.67. The exam with weight 3 moves the average more than the one with weight 1.

What do I need on the next exam

The calculator works backwards. With the grades above (a total of 430 for a weight of 6) and a final exam with weight 4, to reach an average of 75 the total has to be 75 × (6 + 4) = 750. That leaves 750 − 430 = 320 points, and 320 ÷ 4 is 80. So you need 80 on the final exam.

  • If the result is zero or negative, you have already reached the average and do not need the next exam for that.
  • If it is above the maximum grade (100 by default), the calculator warns you that the average is out of reach with that exam alone.
  • We round the grade up to the second decimal place, so the average is really reached.

Every school has its own rules

Grading rules vary: the minimum to pass, rounding, make-up exams, the final exam and even the weight of each term depend on the school, college or course. Use the calculator as support and always check your institution’s rules.

To keep the results, use "Save to a note". One note per course, inside a semester folder (college-2026/calculus/grades), keeps everything together with your class notes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the passing average?
It depends on the institution. Enter yours in the "Passing average" field; the tool’s default is 60 on a 0 to 100 scale.
What if my school grades from 0 to 10?
Set the "Maximum grade" to 10 and the "Passing average" to your school’s value (for example, 6). The calculations work the same way.
How does the calculator treat a blank weight?
As weight 1. That way you can type only the grades to get the simple average.
Are my grades stored?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser and, when you close the page, the values are gone. To keep them, use "Save to a note".
