Sort lines alphabetically online

Updated on October 30, 2026

Paste a list, one item per line, and put everything in alphabetical order, from A to Z or Z to A, by length or reversed. The sort understands accents and knows that "item 2" comes before "item 10". Your list never leaves your browser.

Options

The text is processed in your browser and is not sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Paste the list in the first box, one item per line.
  2. Pick the order: A → Z, Z → A, shortest line to longest, longest to shortest or reversed.
  3. Adjust the options (numbers by value, ignore case, remove blank lines). The result appears instantly.
  4. Copy the result or save it to a note.

How the sorting works

  • Accents: follow the language’s alphabetical order. "Éclair" sits with the E words, not after "Z" as a plain character-code sort would put it.
  • Numbers by value: with the option on, "item 2" comes before "item 10". Off, character order rules and "item 10" comes before "item 2".
  • Uppercase and lowercase: with the option on, "banana" and "Banana" are equal. Off, lowercase letters come before capitals of the same letter.
  • Equal lines keep the order they were in (the sort is stable).
  • Reversed: simply flips the list upside down, without comparing items. Good for reading the end of a log first.

Ways to use it

  • Alphabetize a list of names, guests, books or countries.
  • Organize references and bibliographies by author surname.
  • Sort keywords, hashtags or tags to spot repeated and similar ones.
  • Tidy lists of files, commands or configuration variables.
  • Sort dates written as year-month-day (2026-10-30), which come out in chronological order when sorted as text.

One limit to know

The sort compares the text of the whole line. If each line has several fields (for example, "surname, name, city"), it sorts by the start of the line. To sort by another field, put that field first. Dates in other formats, such as month/day/year, do not come out in chronological order: write them as year-month-day before sorting.

Frequently asked questions

Does alphabetical order respect accents?
Yes. Sorting follows the language’s rules: accented letters sit next to their base letter ("é" near "e"), not after "z".
What happens to blank lines?
By default they are removed. Untick "Remove blank lines" to keep them; in that case they go to the top of the list.
Can I sort a list of numbers?
Yes. With "Sort numbers by value" on, 2 comes before 10, and 10 before 100.
Is the data sent anywhere?
No. Everything is done in your browser.
