Clean the formatting of copied text
Updated on October 30, 2026
Copied text from a PDF, a website or Word and it came with broken lines, curly quotes, bullets and characters you cannot even see? Paste it here, choose what to clean and take away only plain text. Nothing is uploaded: it all happens in your browser.
When you paste into the field above, the browser already drops font, color, size and links: only the text stays.
The text is processed in your browser and is not sent anywhere.
How to use it
- Paste the text in the first box. Font, color, size and links are dropped right away: only the text stays.
- Tick the cleanups you want to apply. The first two are on by default.
- See the result in the second box and copy it.
- If you like, save it to a note to open on another device.
What each option does
- Invisible characters: deletes zero-width characters, soft hyphens and byte-order marks, which come with text from web pages and apps and break searches and comparisons. The non-breaking space becomes a regular space.
- Repeated spaces and extra blank lines: merges double spaces and reduces consecutive blank lines to one.
- Join the lines of each paragraph: for text copied from a PDF, where each line ends where the page line ended. Lines become running text, a blank line separates paragraphs and words hyphenated at the line end are put back together.
- Curly quotes to straight: replaces “ ” and ‘ ’ with " and '. Useful for code, spreadsheets and systems that do not understand curly quotes.
- Long dashes to a hyphen: replaces – and — with -.
- Bullets: removes •, ▪, ●, ◦, - and * from the start of lines, leaving only each item’s text.
PDF text
In PDFs, each line is usually copied with a break at the end, even in the middle of a sentence. When you paste it into an email or document, the text looks cut and misaligned. Turn on "Join the lines of each paragraph" and the sentences come back whole. Review the result: headings and short lists are joined too, and you may need to put a line break back in them.
Paste without formatting anywhere
In almost every program, Ctrl+Shift+V (Cmd+Shift+V on a Mac) pastes text without its original formatting. This tool goes further: besides dropping the formatting, it cleans invisible details that paste-without-formatting keeps, such as non-breaking spaces and unwanted breaks.
Frequently asked questions
- Does the text lose bold and italics?
- Yes. The result is plain text, with no bold, italics, color, font size or links. That is the purpose of the tool.
- Are emojis kept?
- Yes. The cleanup does not touch emojis or accented letters.
- Does it work with text copied from Word?
- Yes. Paste it into the box and use the options you want; Word often brings curly quotes, long dashes and non-breaking spaces.
- Is the text saved or sent?
- It is not sent to any server. It stays only in your browser until you close the page, unless you use "Save to a note".
