Generate a URL slug from text
Updated on October 30, 2026
Paste a title and get the clean address for the page: "How to Write Simple Meeting Notes: A Quick Guide!" becomes "how-to-write-simple-meeting-notes-a-quick-guide". You can generate several at once, one per line. Your text never leaves your browser.
Type a title, one per line, to generate the slug.
The text is processed in your browser and is not sent anywhere.
How to use it
- Type or paste the title in the first box. For several titles, put one per line.
- Choose the separator: hyphen, the most common in website addresses, or underscore.
- For a shorter address, tick the option to drop small words or set a maximum length.
- Copy the result and use it in the page address, a file name or an item identifier.
What a slug is
A slug is the last part of a page address, describing it in a few words. In "mysite.com/blog/how-to-write-meeting-notes", the slug is "how-to-write-meeting-notes". A good slug is easy to read, remember and say out loud, and gives whoever sees the link an idea of the content before clicking.
Rules the tool applies
- Everything lowercase, because some servers tell uppercase from lowercase and that causes broken links.
- No accents, cedillas or tildes: "café" becomes "cafe". Accented letters in addresses get encoded and become unreadable.
- Only letters and numbers. Spaces, punctuation and symbols become a separator, and repeated separators or ones at the ends are removed.
- Apostrophes vanish without leaving a separator: "don’t" becomes "dont".
- The default separator is the hyphen. Google recommends hyphens, not underscores, to separate the words in an address.
- With "maximum length", the cut happens at the end of a word, so the slug does not stop in the middle of one.
Tips for good addresses
- Keep it short: three to five words are usually enough. Dropping "the", "of" and "for" helps.
- Put the most important word first and avoid repeating what is already in the site address.
- Do not include dates or version numbers if the content may be updated.
- After publishing, avoid changing the slug. If you must, set up a redirect from the old address, so you do not lose the links already pointing to it.
Text in non-Latin alphabets (Chinese, Arabic, Cyrillic, Greek) does not produce a slug in this tool, because it keeps only the letters a to z and numbers.
Frequently asked questions
- Hyphen or underscore?
- For page addresses, the hyphen. Search engines read it as a word separator. The underscore is more common in file names and programming variables.
- Can I generate several slugs at once?
- Yes. Put one title per line and each line becomes a slug.
- What is the ideal length?
- There is no fixed limit, but short addresses are easier to read and share. Many SEO guides suggest staying under 60 characters, and the tool lets you set a maximum.
- Is the text sent to a server?
- No. The slug is generated in your browser.
