Remove accents from text online

Updated on October 30, 2026

Paste a text and strip all accents, tildes and cedillas at once: "Café, naïve and São João" becomes "Cafe, naive and Sao Joao". If you like, the tool also removes punctuation and symbols. Your text never leaves your browser.

Options

The text is processed in your browser and is not sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Paste or type your text in the first box.
  2. The result, without accents, shows up instantly in the second box.
  3. If you need a text with only letters and numbers, tick the option to also remove punctuation and symbols.
  4. Copy the result or save it to a note.

What changes in each letter

  • Acute, grave and circumflex accents: á, à, â, é, ê, í, ó, ô, ú become a, a, a, e, e, i, o, o, u.
  • Tilde: ã, õ and ñ become a, o and n.
  • Cedilla: ç becomes c.
  • Umlaut and diaeresis: ü, ï and ë become u, i and e.
  • Special letters from other languages: ß becomes ss, æ becomes ae, œ becomes oe, ø becomes o, ł becomes l.
  • Uppercase and lowercase are kept: "Éclair" becomes "Eclair" and "ÉCLAIR" becomes "ECLAIR".
  • Numbers, spaces, line breaks and emojis stay as they are, unless you tick the option to remove symbols.

When to remove accents

  • File and folder names that will be used on old systems or sent through email and messaging apps.
  • Page addresses and usernames, which work best with unaccented letters only (for addresses, see also the slug generator).
  • Importing lists into programs and spreadsheets that garble special characters.
  • Comparing or searching texts without worrying about whether someone typed "cafe" or "café".
  • Sorting lists and removing duplicates while ignoring accents.

Things to watch for

Removing accents can change the meaning: in Portuguese, "país" and "pais", "avô" and "avo"; in Spanish, "sí" and "si". For text that people will read, keep the accents. Use the removal when the destination requires plain characters, or to compare and search. If the text will be shown to people, review the result.

Some files and systems store the letter and the accent as two separate characters ("combining" accents). The tool removes those too, because it treats the accent as a mark apart from the letter.

Frequently asked questions

Is the cedilla removed too?
Yes. "ç" becomes "c" and "Ç" becomes "C".
Can I undo it afterwards?
Not automatically: the accent information is lost. Keep the original text (for example, in a note) before converting.
Does it work with other languages, like French and Spanish?
Yes. Accents from French, Spanish, German, Italian and other Latin-alphabet languages are removed too. Alphabets such as Cyrillic, Greek, Arabic and Chinese are not converted into Latin letters.
Is the text sent to a server?
No. The conversion happens in your browser and the text is not stored.
