Exam study plan template

Updated on October 28, 2026

Studying for an exam without a plan usually ends with a long night before it. With the date, the list of topics and a day-by-day split, your study time is spread out, there is time left for practice and the last day is only for review.

Questions for the teacher

Formulas and points to review the day before

How to use it

  1. As soon as you know the date, create the note with "Use this template" and write the topics covered and the exam format.
  2. Be honest in "What I know and what is missing". That list decides where most of your time goes.
  3. Spread the topics over the days until the exam, starting with what you know least and leaving the last two days for a practice test and review.
  4. Tick each day you complete. If a day slips, redistribute right away instead of piling everything up at the end.

Tips

  • Practice teaches more than rereading. For every hour of theory, set aside at least as much time for solving problems.
  • Past exams are the best training: they show the teacher’s style and the kind of question that usually comes up.
  • Write down questions as soon as they come up and bring them to the next class. A forgotten doubt comes back on the exam.
  • The day before, only review the formulas and key points section, and go to bed early.

Several exams in the same week

In exam weeks, create one note per exam inside a folder (exams/2026-november) and an overall plan with the days of the week. Each day, two subjects at most. The order follows the exam dates, but the subject with the most new material starts earlier, even if its exam comes later. That way no subject is left for the night before. If your school posts results as they come in, use each exam’s result to adjust the plan for the next one.
